Locality: Squawberry, Tennessee, United States (36.105843, -82.099521)

Notes: This purplish-striped stem belongs to mountain angelica, Angelica triquinata. They are not yet in bloom, but coming up everywhere along the Appalachian Trail near Carver's Gap now. By August, the Appalachian Balds will be covered in their large green umbels again.
