Tufted on short rhizomes, 2-5 dm; panicle compact, 3-5 cm; glumes 6-8 mm; sterile lemmas awned below the tip, the awn of the lower lemma short and straight, that of the upper lemma 5-9 mm, geniculate; 2n=56-78. Often apomictic. Circumboreal in arctic and alpine meadows, s. to alpine summits of N. Engl. and N.Y. (Savastana a.)
