Branching perennial to 1 m; lvs linear to narrowly oblong, 2-6 cm נ3-8 mm, firm, sharply serrate to subentire; fls solitary in the axils; pedicels jointless, 5-25 mm, cal thinly stellate to glabrous, the midrib usually pilosulous; pet bright yellow, 10-15 mm; carpels commonly 10, each tipped by 2 slender, erect, puberulent beaks. Dry or moist soil; se. Va. to Tenn. and se. Mo., s. to Fla. and Tex. June-Aug. (S. inflexa)
