Almost invariably found in beech and sugar maple woods and rarely in white ash and red oak or in black oak and white oak woods. Usually in large colonies and rather frequent in the northern counties, becoming rare or absent until the southern counties are reached. Here it is found in similar habitats and is as abundant as in the northern part. This species does well in cultivation and flowers from May until freezing weather.
