Culms 1-4 m, blades to 1 m נ3 cm, with wide midvein, scabrous on the margins; panicle nodding, 2-6 dm, with numerous ascending, whorled branches; lemmas scabrous on the nerves, the body 6-9 mm; awn of pistillate spikelets 1-5 mm; 2n=24. Marshes and streambanks on the coastal plain; Md. to Fla. and Tex., n. in the interior to se. Mo.
