Spikelets 1-fld, articulated at the base, readily deciduous, subterete, linear-subulate, unisexual, the staminate below the pistillate on the same branches of the panicle; glumes none; lemma lance-linear, acuminate, 7-veined, the pistillate one awned; palea 3-veined, somewhat exceeding the lemma; grain obovoid, tipped with the stiff persistent style; tall marsh-grasses, perennial from rhizomes, with large, flat lvs, long ligules, and large, much branched panicles. 4, New World.
