Much branched annual, 5-10 dm, finely hairy; lvs ovate in outline, 1-2 cm, pinnatifid or bipinnatifid into filiform segments; fls solitary in the upper axils, on pedicels 3-8 mm, forming racemes terminating all the branches; cal-lobes linear-subulate, 2-3 mm; cor pale yellow, ±marked with purple internally, 1 cm wide; anthers 3 mm; fr acuminate, 6-7 mm; 2n=26. Pine-barrens on the coastal plain; se. Va. to Fla. and La., and farther inland in the s. states. Sept., Oct. (Afzelia c.)
