Diffusely branched, rough-hairy perennial, 1.5-6 dm, evergreen toward the s.; lvs in 4 s, thick, elliptic or oblong, 5-12 mm, half as wide, apiculate, 1-nerved; fls 2-5 together on hairy peduncles from the upper axils; fr a purple berry 3.5 mm. Sandy soil, especially pine-land on the coastal plain; s. N.J. to La. Summer. (G. bermudense, misapplied)
