Stems very slender; petioles downy; lvs cordate, 3-5 cm, sparsely hairy; peduncles of the petaliferous, usually sterile fls 5-10 cm, of the fertile apetalous fls 2-5 cm and often recurved; hypanthium densely hairy; sep unequal, usually 3-toothed at the tip; pet 4-8 mm; frs few, 3-4 mm. Swamps and moist woods; Que. and N.S. to Mich. and Minn., s. to N.J. and O. June-Sept.
