Aerial flowering stems villous. Inflorescence branches villous.

Flowering Jun-Sep. Sandy to gravelly slopes and flats, sage-brush communities, pinyon and/or juniper and montane conifer woodlands; 500-2000(-2500) m; Calif., Nev., Oreg.

Variety villosum is found primarily in scattered places in the southern portion of the species' range, namely in the Siskiyou/Trinity mountains of southern Oregon (Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath counties) and northern California (Siskiyou and Trinity counties), and in the Sierra Nevada of California (Nevada, Placer, Plumas, and Shasta counties) and Nevada (Carson City, Douglas, and Washoe counties). The taxonomic significance of this variety is questionable, as pubescence may be the result of minor genetic differences.
