Involucres glabrous.

Flowering May-Aug. Sandy to gravelly flats and slopes, mixed grassland and chaparral communities, oak and mon-tane conifer woodlands; 600-2200 m; Calif., Idaho.

Variety inerme is rare to infrequent at scattered sites in Coast and Transverse ranges of California in Contra Costa, Kern, Lake, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Tulare, and Ventura counties. The Idaho population (near New Centerville, Boise County) is a recent intro-duction, probably having come from California with mining equipment.
