Plants 50-120 cm. Leaves opposite; blades rhombic-ovate to lance-linear, 5-12 cm, apices acute or obtuse.

Flowering summer-early fall. Dry, open places; 400-2400 m; Alta., Man., N.B., N.S., Ont., Que., Sask.; Colo., Conn., Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kans., Maine, Mass., Minn., Mo., Mont., Nebr., N.H., N.J., N.Mex., N.Dak., Pa., R.I., S.Dak., Tex., Vt., Wis., Wyo.

This is a typical prairie species and is frequent in the "western prairie" area of the state. It is also local in other parts of the state in relict prairie areas. According to Watson it is common in plains and moist prairies from western Canada to Texas; introduced and becoming common east of the Mississippi River but rare in the eastern United States.

Smaller, 0.3-1.2 m; lvs 5-10 pairs below the infl, rhombic-ovate to lance-linear, acute or obtuse, 5-12 cm; chiefly on the Great Plains and in Minn. (H. subrhomboideus)
