Stems 1.5-4 dm; lvs broadly ovate to rotund, 3-8 cm, with a few coarse teeth above, abruptly narrowed below to a long petiole; spikes 1-few, lateral from near the base, 5-10 cm; fr a densely pubescent, 3-lobed, basally circumscissile capsule 1.5 cm. Rich woods; Ky., W.Va., and w. N.C. to nw. Fla. and s. La. Apr., May.
