Plants 10-30(-45) cm. Stems glabrate or sparsely villous, densely stipitate-glandular. Leaves: basal blades 50-200 × 15-45 mm, margins entire or coarsely serrate, faces glabrate to sparsely villous, stipitate-glandular. Heads (1-)5-7. Involucres 8-12 × 12-20 mm. Phyllaries loose, subequal, bases chartaceous, apices green (faces stipitate-glandular).

Flowering Jun-Aug. Wet gravelly meadows, forest openings, moist soils; 1200-1800 m; Idaho, Oreg., Wash.

Variety sonchifolia is recognized by its wider leaves and its preference for moist habitats. More study is needed to determine the status of this taxon.
