Like a large-fld form of no. 5 [Rhexia mariana L.], the hypanthium (9)10-15(-20) mm at maturity, the pet mostly dull lavender to rose-purple and 18-25 mm; anthers 8-11 mm; rhizomes sometimes tuberiferous; stems sometimes to 15 dm; hypanthium commonly with some bristles around the rim, otherwise glabrous or nearly so; pet with some glandular bristles on the back; 2n=44, 66. In wetter sites than no. 5; coastal plain from se. Va. to Fla. and La. (R. mariana var. purpurea) Intergrades with no. 5.
