Lanate-villous annual to 3 dm, branched from the base; lvs spatulate or oblanceolate, 1-2.5 cm, toothed; cal 6-10 mm, veiny, densely villous in the throat, the 4 lower lobes subequal, shorter than the tube, aristate, the upper lobe much larger, ovate, its 3 strong nerves confluent into an awn; cor 7-10 mm, yellow, white, or purple; 2n=28. Native of the Mediterranean region, naturalized as a weed in Pa. and W.Va. June-Aug.
