Twigs purple-brown or red-brown; lvs broader, broadly oblanceolate to oblong or obovate, mostly 2-3 times as long as wide, more coarsely and bluntly toothed; infl glabrous or nearly so; hypanthium glabrous; sep acute. Moist or dry, often upland or rocky soil, old fields, and meadows; relatively eastern, from e. Nf. and e. Que. to N.C., w. to Mich. (S. l.)
