From Flora of Indiana (1940) by Charles C. Deam

Frequent in marshes, wet prairies, and mucky places in general in the lake area, but local southward because its habitat is lacking. Where found, it often covers large areas and was formerly the source of "wild hay" in the state and known as little bluestem grass. Since most of the areas of its habitat have been drained and farmed, it has now become infrequent.
