Basal leaves 3-foliolate; blade 2-10 × 3-15 cm; leaflets petiolulate, deeply lobed. Cauline leaves 3-foliolate; blade 2 × 3 cm; leaflet lobes to 1/2 length of leaflet, distal segments not laciniate. 2n = 14.

Flowering May-Aug; fruiting Jul-Oct. Shaded, moist woods; 0-1300 m; Alta., B.C.; Alaska, Calif., Idaho, Mont., Oreg., Wash.

Variety trifoliata has slender roots and caudices.
