Leaf blades linear to linear-oblanceolate, mid 20-80 × 2-6 mm, margins entire, faces glabrate, puberulent, or canescent. Involucres hemispheric, 8-12 mm, widths 2-3 times heights. Phyllaries 90-100, 0.5-1 mm wide (at midpoint), apices long-acuminate, 2-5 mm. Ray florets 20-60. 2n = 8.

Flowering Aug-Sep. Meadows and open areas in coniferous forests; 2400-3000 m; Ariz.

Variety mucronata is known from the Kaibab Plateau (northcentral Arizona).
