Prunella vulgaris var. lanceolata is usually shorter in stature than other Lamiaceae. The rather small purple flowers are in a terminal cluster. The leaves are lanceolate and serrulate. Prunella vulgaris is found at upper elevations in moist meadows.

Frequent throughout the state in moist or rather dry open woods, fallow fields, waste places, hayfields, and along roadsides and railroads. It prefers rather sandy and moist soil near streams and in ravines, and is usually found in grassy places. It adapts itself to almost all kinds of soils and situations.
