Proximal scales 0.9-2 × 0.4-0.5 mm. Flowers: perianth bristles 5-6, whitish to pale or rarely red-brown, 0.2-0.4 mm, shorter than achene, spinules not evident at 45X. Achenes 0.3-0.45 mm wide. Tubercles semicircular in outline or shortly pyramidal, 0.5-0.1 × 0.15-0.2 mm.

Fruiting spring-fall. Freshwater to moist terrestrial sites, wet flatwoods, pine barrens, margins of ponds, ditches, on peaty and sandy soils; 0-600 m; Fla., Ga., La., S.C.; West Indies.
