Much like no. 90 [Carex willdenowii Willd.]; main lvs 2-3 mm wide; staminate scales truncate, erose, with a dark transverse apical band; lowest pistillate scales dilated-saccate at base; perigynia 2-4, obpyriform, the body subglobose above a stipe-like base, distally rounded and abruptly prolonged into the slender 3-angled beak. Rich woods, especially in calcareous soil; chiefly midwestern, from e. Nebr., e. Kans., and e. Okla. to Minn., Mich. and Tenn., occasionally s. to La. and e. to Md. and N.Y.
