Annual, 2-6 dm, roughly stellate-hairy; lvs narrowly oblong to oblong-ovate, 3-7 cm, coarsely serrate, with 1 or 2 large glands at the summit of the petiole; staminate fls with 4 sep, 4 pet, and 7-9 stamens; pistillate fls with 5 sep and no pet, each of the 3 styles bifid nearly to the base; 2n=16. Dry or sandy soil; widespread in trop. and subtrop. Amer., n. to Va., Ind., Io., and Neb., and adventive farther north. Ours have been called var. septentrionalis M
