Plant: perennial herb; rhizomatous; stems mostly 1-1.5 m tall, branched near inflorescence

Leaves: petioles narrowly winged, 6-10 mm long; blades mostly narrowly elliptic, 5-9 cm long, 1-2.4 cm wide; margins evenly serrate

INFLORESCENCE: with lowest bracts leafy, the others much smaller but usually exceeding calyx

Flowers: pedicels 2 mm long; calyx zygomorphic, 5-7 mm long, the teeth shorter than tube, the apices acute; corolla 8-15 mm long, white with red-purple markings

Fruit: NUTLETS ca. 2 mm long and 2 mm wide, brown, glabrous

Misc: Riparian areas from upper Sonoran Desert to oak woodland; 750-1350 m (2400-4500 ft); May-Oct

Rhizomatous perennial with pubescent, solitary stems 3-10 dm; lvs lance-ovate to oblong, 5-12 cm, toothed, obtuse or rounded at base; petioles 5-15 mm; infl a crowded, spiciform raceme 5-20 cm with slender bracts to 1 cm, the pedicels 1-3 mm; cal 5-8 mm, 2-lipped, the 3 upper lobes wider and blunter than the 2 lower; cor pink-purple, 11-18 mm, cleft to the summit of the cal; stamens arching over the cor, diverging from the summit of the cal; fruiting cal not reticulate.
