Stems 1-4 dm, often widely branched, finely retrorse-hairy; lvs lanceolate, broad-based, sessile, 1-3 cm, rough-hairy, with 2-3 blunt teeth on each side; bracts 8-20 mm, fls subsessile; cal campanulate, 5 mm; cor 1 cm, hairy, light red; fr elliptic, hairy, 7 mm; 2n=20. Native of Europe, established as a weed in fields and waste places; Nf., e. Que. and N.S. to Me. and n. N.Y.; Wis., and perhaps elsewhere in our range. July-Sept. (O. odontites)
