Plants 3-4 dm. Caudex stems spreading. Leaves sheathing up stems; blade elliptic to deltoid, 0.3-1.2 × 0.2-0.7 cm. 2n = 40.

Flowering Apr-Dec. Granitic flat outcrops, ledges, and crevices, mixed grassland and mesquite communities, juniper and oak woodlands; 200-600 m; Tex.

Variety ramosissimum is restricted to the 'Hill Country' in Burnet, Gillespie, Llano, and Mason counties of central Texas, where it can be locally common.
