Culms smooth, 1-4 dm; sheaths and filiform blades scaberulous; infl ovoid or cylindric, diffusely branched, 1-2 dm; spikelets on long filiform pedicels; glumes 1.8-2.2 mm; lemmas 1.7-1.9 mm, the lower often awnless, the upper with an awn 1.7-2.4 mm; 2n=14. Native of Europe, intr. along roadsides and in waste ground from Md. to Fla. (A. capillaris; A. elegans)
