Sparingly branched perennial 4-8 dm; lvs sessile and somewhat clasping; ovate-oblong, the main ones 4-6 cm, half as wide, obtuse; fls comparatively few, in small, crowded cymes; sep 6-10 mm, lance-acuminate, marked with long black lines, but seldom dotted; pet 6-12 mm, scarcely dotted; stamens many, fascicled; styles 3-5 mm; fr 3-locular, ovoid, 8-11 mm, essentially glandless; 2n=16. Moist slopes at high altitudes in the mts.; sw. Va., w. N.C., and e. Tenn. July.
