In northern Indiana in moist, sandy soil about lakes and swamps, in low woods, cornfields, and wet prairies. In the southern part of the state it is more frequent in minimacid soil in cultivated or fallow fields, roadside ditches, pin oak and post oak flats, and more rarely on wooded slopes.
