Gelsemium sempervirens image

Climbing to 5 m; lvs lanceolate, 4-7 נ1-2 cm, on petioles 3-8 mm; pedicels 3-5 mm, bearing 2 or more pairs of scale-like bracts; cor 2-3 cm; fr oblong or elliptic, 1.5-2 cm, short-beaked; 2n=16. Woods and thickets; se. Va. to Tenn. and Ark., s. to Fla. and Mex. Apr. All parts of the plant contain poisonous alkaloids.
