Plants 2-4 dm. Leaf blades oblong to oblanceolate or elliptic, (2-)3-5 × 0.8-2.5(-3) cm, tomentose abaxially, margins plane. Involucres (2.5-)3-3.5 mm. Perianths yellow.

Flowering Jul-Nov. Sandy to clayey flats and slopes, saltbush, blackbrush, and sagebrush communities, pinyon-juniper woodlands; 1000-1700 m; Ariz., Utah.

Variety thompsoniae is found infrequently in Kane and Washington counties, Utah, and in Mohave County, Arizona.
