Erect biennial to 1 m, glabrous above the base; basal lvs oblanceolate, finely stellate on both sides; cauline lvs lance-linear to oblong, erect or nearly so, 2-5 cm, auriculate, entire, glabrous; pet pinkish or white, 5-8 mm; mature pedicels spreading, 6-12 mm; frs at first erect, soon spreading, linear, straight or nearly so, 3-9 cm x 1.2-2.2 mm, the valves 1-nerved to or beyond the middle; seeds in 1 or 2 rows; 2n=14, 20, 21, 28. Sandy or rocky soil; Que. to Yukon, s. to N.H., Wis., n. Io., and Calif. June, July. (A. brachycarpa; A. confinis)
