Plants annual, scapose, erect, 5-25 cm, glabrous, sometimes glaucous. Leaves basal; blade with ultimate lobes acute. Inflorescences 1-flowered; buds nodding or sometimes erect. Flowers: receptacle conic, cup without spreading free rim; calyx acuminate, glabrous, sometimes glaucous; petals yellow, (10-)12-25 mm. Capsules 4-7 cm. Seeds tan to brown, spheric, 1.2-1.8 mm, minutely pitted. 2 n = 14.

Flowering spring (Mar-May). Desert washes, flats, slopes; 50-1500 m; Ariz., Calif., Nev., Utah.

Eschscholzia glyptosperma is known from the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.

Plant: Annual herb; 0.5-2.5 dm tall

Leaves: all basal or apparently so, ascending to erect (rarely spreading), glabrous, sometimes glaucous; terminal leaf divisions linear to filiform, acute, the longest 5-10 mm or more

INFLORESCENCE: scapes or few- to many-flowered cymes

Flowers: bud generally nodding, ovoid, acute to acuminate; outer rim lacking or less than 0.5 mm wide; inner rim erect, hyaline, less than 0.5 mm tall; sepals glabrous, sometimes glaucous, 8-13 mm long; petals yellow, usually more than 12 mm long

Fruit: capsules, cylindric, dehiscent from base, 4-8 cm long. SEEDS spheric or ovate, microscopically pitted, tan to brown, 1.2-1.8 mm wide

Misc: Desert scrub, often in sandy or gravelly soil; 450-800 m (1400-2600 ft); Feb-May (fr. Mar-Jun)
