Annual 2-8 dm, branched and spreading, the stems ±hirtellous on the angles; lvs thin, narrowly elliptic to lance-oblong, 3-6(-10) cm, acute, gradually narrowed to an acute or obtuse base; stipules linear, 3-5 mm; sep 2, linear or lance-linear, 4-6 mm; cor salverform, with very slender tube, white or pink, 8-11 mm; stigmas 2; fr ellipsoid, obtusely 8-ribbed, 6-9 mm; 2n=28. Wet ground; s. N.J. to s. O., s. Ill., and Mo., s. to Fla. and Tex. June-Aug.
