From Flora of Indiana (1940) by Charles C. Deam

A very rare plant in this state and probably confused with other species. Our older manuals did not recognize Monarda clinopodia and when the flowers lose their color, the species are separated with difficulty. It has been reported from Clark, Franklin, Jefferson, and Putnam Counties, for the area of Delaware, Jay, Randolph, and Wayne Counties, and for the area of the Lower Wabash Valley. All of these reports were made before 1886. Schneck, in 1872, says for the Lower Wabash Valley: Open woods and fence-rows, common. I have it from clayey roadsides and dry wooded slopes from Knox and Posey Counties.
