Leaves 10-20 mm wide, glaucous adaxially. Flowers usually zygomorphic; tepals connivent over capsule after anthesis, usually forced apart again by capsule growth, pale to deep bluish violet, each 3- or 5-veined, 16-31 × 3-5 cm; anthers dull yellow to violet, 2.5-4 mm; fruiting pedicel incurving-erect, 10-20 mm. Capsules 9-18 mm. Seeds 5-10 per locule.

Flowering mid--late spring. Wet meadows; 1000--2400 m; Idaho, Mont., Utah, Wyo.
