Stem stout, 2-5 dm, simple or branched near the base; lvs spatulate to linear-oblong or lanceolate, mostly 2-5 cm, the lower cuneate, the upper truncate to cordate-auriculate at base; cymules sessile or nearly so; sep obtuse, often minutely mucronate; pet pink, 1 mm, caducous, or wanting; style only 0.5 mm, included in the hypanthium even in fr; 2n=48. Wet ground on the coastal plain; N.J. to Fla. and Tex., s. to trop. Amer. July-Sept. (A. koehnei; A. teres)
