Cal deeply 5-parted; cor very irregular, spurred at base, strongly bilabiate, the lower lip with a well developed palate that does not close the throat; stamens 4; stigma capitate; fr subglobose, oblique, each locule opening by a single large, irregular, terminal pore; annual or perennial herbs with alternate, narrow, entire lvs and small, pediceled fls solitary in the axils. 20, Mediterranean region.
