Plants 20-60 cm. Leaves: petioles narrowly winged; blades narrowly obovate, elliptic, lanceolate, or spatulate, sometimes runcinate, 0.5-3.5 cm wide, margins entire or toothed to pinnately lobed (lobes or teeth remote, not prominently white-tipped), faces glabrous or hispidulous. Heads 1-12. Involucres 8-10 mm. Phyllaries lanceolate, strongly stipitate-glandular, apices acute. Cypselae dark brown, 3.5-7.5 mm, tapered, not beaked; pappi 4-6 mm. 2n = 22.

Flowering Jun-Jul. Moist meadows, low wet areas, swales, bogs; 400-2700 m; Alta., B.C., Man., Sask.; Colo., Idaho, Minn., Mont., Nebr., Nev., N.Mex., N.Dak., Oreg., S.Dak., Utah, Wash., Wyo.
