Leaves: petiole usually winged; basal blade oblanceolate. Flower-ing stems and inflorescence branches tomentose.

Flowering May-Oct. Sandy flats and slopes, chaparral com-munities, oak and montane conifer woodlands; (100-)500-2200 m; Calif.

Variety cithariforme is usually uncommon throughout its range in the mountains and foothills of southwestern California (Kern, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties). In vigorous plants, the winged petiole is striking.
