Sep 5-12, often 6, petaloid; pet and staminodes none; pistils numerous; ovary tapering to a short style; achenes conic to fusiform, hairy; perennial herbs with basal, simple, lobed lvs and several 1-fld scapes bearing a calyx-like involucre of 3 entire bracts just beneath the fls. 4, Europe and N. Amer. Our 2 spp. closely allied and also close to European H. nobilis Miller.
