Branching shrub 5-20 dm; lvs linear-oblong to narrowly elliptic, 3-6 cm, not articulate; fls numerous in open, terminal cymes with lance-subulate bracts only 2-3 mm; sep about equal, narrowly oblong, 3-4 mm; pet 6-10 mm; styles 3(4); fr ovoid, 4-5.6 mm, with evidently intruded placentas; 2n=18. Wet soil; se. Va. to Tenn., s. to n. Fla. and s. Miss. June-Aug.
