Erect shrub 3-8(-10) dm; lvs firm, articulate at the slightly clasping base, elliptic-oblong, 1.5-3.5 cm נ7-15 mm, rounded above; fls distinctly pediceled (3-10 mm) above the subulate or lanceolate bracteoles; sep 4, the 2 outer broadly round-ovate or subrotund, 10-18 mm, subcordate at base, 6-7-nerved, the 2 inner narrowly lanceolate, two-thirds as long; pet 4, yellow, obliquely obovate, 12-18 mm; stamens numerous, the filaments distinct or weakly connate at base; styles 3(4), very short; fr unilocular, exserted from the persistent cal. Sandy soil; L.I. and N.J. to Fla., w. to s. Ky., e. Okla., and e. Tex. July, Aug. (Ascyrum s.)
