Tall shrub; lvs elliptic to oblong, 5-10 cm, acute or subacuminate, apparently entire, but actually minutely appressed-serrulate; fls 4-5-merous, the staminate in pedunculate clusters, the pistillate solitary on a pedicel equaling or surpassing the subtending petiole; sep ciliate; fr red, nutlets grooved on the back. Swamps and wet woods on the coastal plain; se Va. to Fla. and La.; rare.
