Stems several from a long stout root, 2-4 dm, branched above; lvs sessile, nearly linear, 1-3 cm, hairy; umbels long-peduncled, 1-2 cm wide; bracts ovate, toothed; pedicels short at anthesis, elongating to 5 mm in fr; sep linear, eventually 2 mm; cor blue, soon split into linear lobes, surpassed by the style; 2n=12. Native of Europe, intr. in waste places and fields, usually in sandy soil; Mass. to N.J. June-Sept.
