Perennial 4-10 dm from a cluster of fleshy-fibrous roots, often also stoloniferous, glabrous to often minutely granular-pulverulent throughout; lvs linear, 2-6 cm נ1-5 mm; fls 4-merous; sep 3-4 mm; pet 3-5 mm; anthers 1 mm; fr subcylindric, somewhat widened above, obscurely 4-sided, 6-9 mm; 2n=16. Wet soil, muddy shores, or shallow waters; s. N.J. to Fla., Ark., and Tex., chiefly on the coastal plain. July-Sept.
