Much like no. 4 [Pyrus coronaria L.]; lvs firm, oblong to elliptic, 3-7 cm, obtuse to subacute, tapering to the base, glabrous or sparsely pubescent beneath when young, those of the fl-spurs unlobed, those of rapidly growing shoots often with several shallow lobes; 2n=34, 68. Woods and thickets; mainly from N.C. to n. Fla. and w. to La., but occasionally to N.J., s. O., w. Ky., Ark., and e. Tex. (Malus a.)
