Perennial; stems usually branched, to 1 m, glabrous or sparsely hairy; lvs ovate or broadly lance-deltoid, the larger ones often half as wide as long; petioles 1-2 cm; bracts partly or wholly purple; cal usually purple, glabrous to villous in the throat, the lobes minutely glandular- puberulent; cor red-purple, 2-3 cm, the upper lip slender, nearly straight, thinly hairy but not villous at the tip. Moist woods and thickets; Me. to s. Ont. and Va.; also in w. N.C. and reported from Ind. July, Aug.
