Annual or biennial, 1-10 dm, hirsute-puberulent and somewhat viscid; lvs basal and cauline, only gradually reduced upwards, petiolate (less so upwards) with pinnatifid or subbipinnatifid blade 1.5-10 cm; infls scattered or loosely aggregated; cor purplish, broadly campanulate, 6-10 mm, hairy outside, glabrous inside, the lobes entire; filaments hairy, equaling or slightly surpassing the cor; style elongate, hairy below; seeds numerous, 1.5 mm; 2n=22. Open places in wooded regions; Isle Royale and the n. shore of Lake Superior, nw. to Mack. and Yukon, thence s. to B.C. and n. Utah. June, July.
